Mr. Shane Madden reports
HYDREIGHT HIGHLIGHTS U.S. PATENT ALLOWANCE FOR INSU THERAPEUTICS' NEEDLE-FREE INSULIN AND GLP-1 DELIVERY TECHNOLOGY
Insu Therapeutics Inc., in which Hydreight Technologies Inc. holds a strategic investment, has received a notice of allowance from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for a patent application covering its buccal peptide-delivery technology.
The allowance advances the intellectual-property foundation supporting InsuTab, Insu's investigational buccal insulin formulation, and BuccaGLP, its investigational buccal semaglutide formulation. Both programs are being developed to deliver peptide medicines through the lining of the mouth, providing a potential needle-free alternative to injections.
As disclosed in its March 13, 2026, news release, Hydreight completed a $300,000 investment in Insu and obtained distribution rights for U.S. distribution of peptide medicines incorporating Insu's buccal technology. These distribution rights do not limit Insu and Hydreight ability to pursue licensing, development, commercialization or other strategic partnerships with large pharmaceutical The patent allowance further strengthens the value of Hydreight's strategic investment and its potential future U.S. distribution opportunity, while supporting Insu's broader global development, licensing and commercialization strategy
Connecting delivery innovation with U.S. health care infrastructure
"This milestone advances the technology behind our investment in Insu and the potential distribution opportunity we have secured in the United States," said Shane Madden, chief executive officer of Hydreight. "Our focus is to connect innovations in therapeutic delivery with the infrastructure needed to reach patients. Insu's development programs give us an opportunity to participate in that process as the technology progresses."
Hydreight's platform connects health care providers, pharmacies and patients across all 50 U.S. states. Its VSDHOne platform supports businesses delivering physician-supervised healthcare through virtual and direct-to-consumer channels.
If Insu's candidates successfully complete development and receive the required approvals, Hydreight could use its health care infrastructure to support U.S. distribution under its previously disclosed rights. Any future introduction would require appropriate product-specific prescribing, pharmacy and operational arrangements.
Exclusive technology licence and U.S. patent allowance
The notice of allowance relates to U.S. patent application No. 18/513,373, titled "Mucoadhesive Pharmaceutical Dosage Form for Unidirectional Release of Peptide Therapeutic Particles."
Insu holds an exclusive, worldwide licence from the University of British Columbia (UBC), granting it rights to develop, market, commercialize and sublicense the licensed technology globally.
The allowed claims relate to the platform's mucoadhesive, layered dosage-form architecture and unidirectional release mechanism for insulin and GLP-1 therapeutics. The published application identifies semaglutide, liraglutide, dulaglutide and exenatide, alongside multiple insulin analogues. The scope of protection will be determined by the final issued claims.
A different route for delivering peptide medicines
Insu's technology uses a layered dosage form designed to adhere to the inner cheek and direct the release of an encapsulated peptide toward the underlying tissue. The approach is intended to support absorption through the mouth's lining rather than relying on gastrointestinal absorption after swallowing.
Insu reports that its formulation does not require fasting or restrictions on food and drink before or after dosing. The buccal format also avoids the needles and associated injection supplies required to administer an injectable product. Further studies are required to establish the performance, safety and efficacy of the individual candidates.
Insu has completed laboratory, cell-culture and rat studies at UBC as proof-of-concept work for its buccal insulin program. Its buccal semaglutide program applies the same delivery architecture to a GLP-1 medicine used in metabolic disease.
Research by members of the Insu scientific team was published in Pharmaceutics in September, 2023, under the title "Concept for a Unidirectional Release Mucoadhesive Buccal Tablet for Oral Delivery of Antidiabetic Peptide Drugs Such as Insulin, Glucagon-like Peptide 1 (GLP-1), and their Analogs." The publication provides scientific context for Insu's development approach.
"This allowance advances an important part of our development strategy," said Dr.
Anubhav Pratap-Singh,
board chair and co-founder of Insu Therapeutics. "We are bringing together exclusive technology rights, formulation research and a clear initial focus on insulin and semaglutide. Our objective is to translate that foundation into practical needle-free treatment options and future commercial opportunities."
InsuTab and BuccaGLP remain investigational and are not approved for commercial sale. The patent allowance relates to intellectual property protection and does not constitute regulatory approval or establish the candidates' safety or efficacy. Hydreight's distribution opportunity remains subject to successful development and regulatory approvals.
