Globe says Northland sees Enfinite expand in Alberta

2023-11-22 07:53 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, Nov. 22, edition that Enfinite, already the biggest player in energy storage in Alberta, is about to flip the switch on 60 more megawatts (MW) of capacity spread over three facilities near Grande Prairie. The Globe's guest columnist Saira Peesker writes that the new projects will bring the company's total energy storage capacity to 180 MW. Enfinite's utility-scale Tesla "Megapack" lithium ion batteries will add to Canada's still relatively small capacity for energy storage, estimated by industry group Energy Storage Canada (ESC) to be less than one gigawatt (1,000 MW) in total across the country. ESC estimates that in order to reach Canada's climate goals of a net-zero electricity grid by 2035, we will need at least eight to 12 times that capacity. Ontario is making plans for expanded energy storage capacity, including a 250 MW project at Six Nations of the Grand River. That project alone is anticipated to reduce emissions by between 2.2 million and 4.1 million tonnes, the equivalent to taking up to 40,000 cars off the road, according to Northland Power executive vice-president of onshore renewables Michelle Chislett. Northland is the majority owner of the project.
