The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that University Health Network urges governments, pension funds and pharmaceutical companies to increase investment in life sciences to strengthen the Canadian economy amid the United States trade war. The Globe's Chris Hannay writes that UHN will release a report titled From Discovery to Global Supplier later this month. Canada has a strong legacy of innovation in drugs, medical devices and technologies like artificial intelligence, but has struggled to build companies that leverage these advancements for economic benefit. UHN chief Kevin Smith stated that the report is part of a broader initiative started last year following significant science funding cuts by the Trump administration. UHN has since hired numerous global scientists through its Canada Leads program. The White House has announced tariffs on pharmaceutical products and is pressuring drug makers to relocate production to the U.S. from countries like Canada. Dr. Smith said Canada needs to act more urgently. He drew comparisons to countries such as Denmark, where Novo Nordisk -- the maker of Ozempic -- is an economic powerhouse, where a favourable tax code has drawn many pharmaceutical manufacturers.
