The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Aug. 28, edition that GLP-1 drug sales have surged, significantly impacting pharmacies, drug makers and health-tech companies, with new data showing continued momentum. The Globe's Chris Hannay writes that GLP-1s are used to treat conditions such as diabetes and weight management. The most notable drugs in this category are Ozempic and Wegovy (both containing semaglutide) from Novo Nordisk, and Mounjaro and Zepbound (contain tirzepatide) from Eli Lilly. Ozempic has been by far the best-selling drug in Canada for the past few years. It is on pace to set a new record in 2026. About $1.49-billion worth of Ozempic was sold in retail pharmacies in the first half of this year, plus $455-million worth of Wegovy, $311-million of Mounjaro and $124-million of Zepbound. For the first time, the sales data include generic forms of semaglutide, which became legal in Canada this year. Canadian manufacturer Apotex Health sold $15-million of its version of semaglutide before June 30, while India's Dr. Reddy's Laboratories sold just $1-million. Sales have been modest, as the products only appeared on shelves in the last few weeks of the reporting period.
