The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, April 3, edition that Aspect Biosystems has secured additional government funding to expand its capacity to 3-D print live tissue implants that can replace organ functions. The Globe's Sean Silcoff writes that Ottawa is contributing $79-million to a $280-million multiyear project aimed at advancing its bioengineered cellular medicines for serious metabolic and endocrine diseases. Two years ago Ottawa announced support for a $200-million plan by Aspect, contributing $49-million for manufacturing facilities and technology development. The B.C. government added $23.75-million. Aspect chief Tamer Mohamed says, "We're the only G7 country without a biopharma giant, and part of getting there is these types of partnerships" with government. "My goal is to build a Novo Nordisk here in Canada that's at the same scale and size." Novo is a key partner for Aspect. In 2023, Aspect signed a development deal with Novo after demonstrating its implants could treat diabetes in rodents. Novo secured exclusive rights to develop up to four diabetes and obesity products using Aspect's technology, with the deal valued at up to $2.6-billion in milestone payments and royalties from product sales.
