The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, May 19, edition that NextEra Energy announced plans to acquire Dominion Energy in an all-stock deal. A New York Times dispatch to The Globe reports that NextEra has been looking to capitalize on what chief executive officer John Ketchum has called "America's golden age of power demand." Last year, it struck deals with Google in Iowa and Meta in New Mexico. According to the terms of the deal, NextEra, which has market value of about $194-billion, would exchange about eight-10ths of a share of its stock for each outstanding share of Dominion, which has a market value of $54-billion (all figures U.S.). NextEra shareholders would ultimately own about 75 per cent of the combined company, and Dominion shareholders would get a $360-million cash payment when the deal closes. Including debt, the deal values Dominion at more than $120-billion. The agreement with Dominion requires federal approval and is part of a trend of megadeals across industries, as executives seek to benefit from a favorable environment for mergers under President Donald Trump's administration. Some view this as a potential signal of a strong economy ahead of the midterm elections in November.
