FP says Nano One sees Nextstar change direction

2025-11-04 07:08 ET - In the News

The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday, Nov. 4, edition that Nextstar Energy will focus on producing batteries for energy storage, not electric vehicles, when its Windsor, Ont., gigafactory starts commercial production next month. The Post's Gabriel Friedman writes that chief executive officer Danies Lee says entering the energy storage market will keep the plant operational until EV sales increase. He says: "The EV market is slowed down. It's like a trend that will come soon, but it does not come as soon as we expect it, so while we are waiting, we have this opportunity from the [energy storage system] market." ESS batteries store energy during off-peak hours and release it when needed. Nano One Materials recently received $5-million from Ottawa so it can ramp up its pilot plant in Candiac, Que. where it hopes to prove out and scale up its patented process for making LFP cathodes, which it says is 30 per cent more cost-efficient. Its business plan is to license the technology. John Hopkins University professor Bentley Adams says, "Having LFP batteries made in Canada is a huge win from an industrial strategy standpoint."
