The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that RBC Dominion Securities analyst Nelson Ng is keeping his "sector perform" call on Methanex intact. The Globe's David Leeder writes in the Eye On Equities column that Mr. Ng chipped five bucks from his share target, taking it to $55 (all figures U.S.). Analysts on average target the shares at $55. The Globe says Mr. Ng sees methanol's recent price weakness biting into Methanex's cash flow. Mr. Ng says in a note: "We note that Methanex's North American reference price continues to be at a significant premium (approximately 94 per cent) to the North American spot price (illiquid market), while the China reference price is at a 50-per-cent premium to the spot price. As a result, we believe there is a potential that the company's realized price will have a larger-than-normal discount to the posted prices (management guided toward a 21-per-cent discount for 2023). The discount is typically larger during periods where methanol prices decline. ... We see rising recessionary uncertainties, which could negatively impact near-term and longer-term methanol prices. However, we believe the shares are suitable for investors that have a more constructive view on the economy."
