The Vancouver Sun reports in its Thursday edition that McDonald's Canada has rolled out a trial of a plant-based sandwich named the McVeggie in select markets across the country this month. The Sun's Stephanie Ip writes that McVeggie features a seasoned, breaded, plant-based patty made from carrots, green beans, zucchini, peas, soybeans, broccoli and corn. The sandwich is topped with the same shredded lettuce and mystery sauce on a toasted sesame bun, and can be ordered as a stand-alone item or in a combo with the usual fries and drink. A spicy habanero variety of the McVeggie is also available. They can be found at McDonald's locations in Langley, Richmond and Surrey. Other markets that will get to enjoy the new test item include Brampton and Windsor in Ontario, and Dieppe, Moncton, Riverview and Sussex in New Brunswick. The trial began Tuesday and will run until April 14. Guests are invited to share feedback to help determine whether the sandwich will become a permanent fixture The dish is the latest attempt by McDonald's Canada at courting customers uninterested in or unable to consume popular staples like the Big Mac. The chain's most recent menu item before the McVeggie was 2019's plant, lettuce and tomato or PLT.
