The National Post reports in its Thursday, Feb. 27, edition that the United States is increasing egg imports and supporting chicken farmers to address its worst outbreak of avian flu, which has driven egg prices over $8 (U.S.) a dozen. A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post reports that the Department of Agriculture plans to import 70 million to 100 million eggs in the next month or two and is focusing on protecting birds and rebuilding chicken populations. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins emphasized reducing egg prices as a top priority. The country's flock of egg-laying hens fell to its lowest levels since 2016, with millions affected since December, leading to purchase limits in stores and surcharges in restaurants. However, McDonald's says it will spare customers an egg surcharge, and will also launch a one-day offer on the McMuffin sandwich for $1 (U.S.). "Unlike others making news recently, you definitely won't see McDonald's USA issuing surcharges on eggs," said McDonald's Michael Gonda. The McDonald's promotion is in contrast to restaurant chains that have tacked on an additional cost for menu items that feature eggs. In recent weeks, both Denny's and Waffle House introduced fees to their menus.
