The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, Sept. 3, edition that Stan Wong, portfolio manager and senior wealth adviser with the Stan Wong Group at Scotia Wealth Management in Toronto, has been a recent buyer of Mastercard. The Globe's Brenda Bouw writes that Mastercard has been a core name in Mr. Wong's portfolio since he first bought the stock in 2014 at about $74 (U.S.) a share. He says, "While I've exited and re-entered the stock over the years because of its volatility and resilience across varying economic conditions, it has remained one of my highest-conviction holdings." Mr. Wong adds: "It aligns very closely with my approach of investing in companies with strong earnings growth that operate in industries with fewer competitors. Alongside Visa Inc., which I also own, Mastercard is part of a global payments near-duopoly with extraordinary scale and high barriers to entry."
He says Mastercard benefits from the shift to digital payments and growth in underpenetrated emerging markets. Mr. Wong concludes: "This presents significant long-term growth potential. With its competitive moat and scalability, it's a strong core investment for the long term."
