The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday edition that Canada has mostly kept its defence relationship with the United States out of recent trade talks. The Globe's Pippa Norman and Gavin John write that with negotiations stalled, experts suggest that major defence procurements may increasingly influence punitive measures from either side. Talks between the two countries collapsed on Friday. On Sunday, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said it was "foolish" for Canada to think it could win a trade war with President Donald Trump. He also falsely claimed that Canada doesn't have a military. Throughout the talks, on the Canadian side, defence has come up mostly in broad terms. Canada's lead negotiators made clear that the goal has been for the trade dispute not to affect other bilateral engagements, including military co-operation. Erin O'Toole, a member of Canada's Advisory Committee on Canada U.S. Economic Relations, said: "The level of aggression shown against us cannot just be sloughed off. It has to be responded to." Even if that means reconsidering Canada's options when it comes to major procurements such as fighter jets, he added. Canada has stalled a legal commitment to buy Lockheed Martin's F-35 jets.
