The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, April 22, edition that Canada's new F-35 fighter jets will be serviced in Quebec through a collaboration between L3Harris Technologies and Lockheed Martin. The Globe's Pippa Norman writes that L3Harris MAS, based in Mirabel, Quebec, was named a strategic partner for the jets' maintenance in November, 2024, when the government planned to acquire 88 F-35s. Today, that order has stalled at a legal commitment to buy just 16 jets while a review of the full purchase ordered more than a year ago by Prime Minister Mark Carney continues. Lockheed Martin is committed to providing Canada with in-house sustainment facilities for its jets, regardless of the number purchased, said Chauncey McIntosh, vice-president and general manager of the F-35 program. He said: "It's not a question in my mind about, is Canada buying 60 or 70 jets, or 100 jets, or 120 jets. This is about: What does it need? What does Canada need to ensure that the jets that they are purchasing can remain in the skies, be available to support the security of Canada at any moment in time?" A joint executive steering committee has been established to assess depot capabilities, work force training and sustainment plans.
