If Russia were to attempt to seize a Canadian Arctic island, the F-35s would likely be more effective in preventing that than Gripens, according to military assessments. Canada could consider a mixed fleet of F-35s and Gripens, but the increased cost and complexity suggest that an F-35 fleet alone would be more effective and could free up funds for other priorities.
