Globe says Lockheed's F-35 could be part of mixed fleet

2026-02-25 07:56 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, Feb. 25, edition that Canadian anger toward President Donald Trump is understandable, but it risks leading to poor policy choices, such as reconsidering the purchase of Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jets. The Globe's guest columnist Christopher Worswick writes that a key goal of purchasing fighter jets is to protect Canada from military threats. While Swedish Gripen jets are cheaper, they are less effective than F-35s. The crucial question is whether Canada can maintain safety with Gripens instead of F-35s. The Canadian military has consistently ranked the F-35 as the best fighter jet for national defence, viewing it as more effective than Chinese and Russian fifth-generation fighters. In contrast, the Gripen is considered a 4.5-generation fighter due to its limited stealth capabilities. If Russia were to attempt to seize a Canadian Arctic island, the F-35s would likely be more effective in preventing that than Gripens, according to military assessments. Canada could consider a mixed fleet of F-35s and Gripens, but the increased cost and complexity suggest that an F-35 fleet alone would be more effective and could free up funds for other priorities.
