The National Post reports in its Friday, Sept. 22, edition that the discovery of what could be the world's largest deposit of lithium, in an ancient supervolcano in the U.S., has sparked new optimism in the electric-vehicle industry, which is reliant on the mineral. A Driving.ca dispatch to the Post reports that The Verge says a group of volcanologists found the lithium store within the Mcdermitt Caldera, which runs along the border between Nevada and Oregon, while breaking ground on the Thacker Pass mine owned by Canadian firm Lithium Americas. They estimate the site may be home to as much as 120 million tonnes of lithium, which may have been created following the eruption of the supervolcano 16 million years ago. At the moment, the U.S. is largely reliant on China for its lithium, so there is been a recent push to mine more on federal lands. If all goes ahead, the Thacker Pass Lithium mine will be the second large-scale mine of its kind in the nation. The project is owned by Lithium Nevada, a subsidiary of Lithium Americas, which financed the recent research.
