Globe says Tesla's charging stations rule the EV road

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that electric vehicles are wonderful if you can charge at home and don't go on long trips in Southern Ontario. The Globe's David Berman writes that when he bought his Hyundai Ioniq 5 five years ago, he thought the public charging experience could only get better as EVs became more popular. This past weekend, though, Mr. Berman found that we are still living with spotty public charging infrastructure. Charging at home overnight, when electricity rates are low, costs him under five dollars for a full charge and a range of nearly 400 kilometres. An average gas-powered car travelling the same 400 kilometres will consume about $60 in gas. On his Saturday return trip from Toronto to London, Ont., the cost to charge at two roadside Ivy charging stations was 69 cents a kilowatt-hour, or $40. But he's still saving. The overall number of chargers increased by 17.4 per cent year-over-year. The number of fast-chargers increased by 33.6 per cent, as new entrants build out their own networks. But based on Mr. Berman's weekend experience, gaps remain for non-Tesla owners. Tesla owners have it made with a far better network -- which is, thankfully, opening up to other manufacturers.
