The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, Oct. 20, edition that Unifor's Stellantis workers have voted overwhelmingly for a strike as contract talks reach an impasse over plans to close and sell the Brampton, Ont. plant. The Globe's Eric Atkins writes that the automaker and the union started collective bargaining in August, but Unifor left the negotiations on Sept. 11 after Stellantis said it was in a tentative deal to sell its idled Brampton plant to Roshel, a maker of armoured vehicles. There have been no formal talks since then. Unifor said on Monday that 97 per cent of votes cast were for a strike. 'While we now have a mandate, that does not automatically mean a strike will occur," Unifor said, adding the union is not in a legal strike position. A strike or employer lockout cannot occur for 17 days after the conciliator issues a statement, at the request of either party, saying that talks are deadlocked. Neither side has requested the report. A work stoppage would include the company's Windsor plant, which makes minivans, and the casting plant in Toronto. As of Monday, more than 6,400 workers at the Windsor plant are on a layoff for three weeks. Stellantis blames the layoffs on tariffs and declining sales.
