The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that small- and medium-sized businesses are greatly impacted by the cycle of tariffs and countertariffs. The Globe's guest columnist Fraser Johnson says with concentrated supply chains and limited financial flexibility, they struggle to absorb sudden shocks. While government support programs offer some relief, they are not a long-term solution for businesses needing stability and growth opportunities. If the United States enacts 50-per-cent tariffs on Canadian automobiles and parts, it could lead to factory closures in Canada. However, negotiators have four months to reach a deal, which presents incentives to resolve the situation. U.S. tariffs have already cost automakers over $35-billion, with threatened tariffs further straining supply chains. Canada, the largest market for U.S.-made autos and trucks, saw exports drop 22 per cent last year, amounting to a loss of $7-billion. Mr. Johnson is not advocating capitulation. He says no trade deal is better than a bad one. Resolving the trade dispute and pursuing diversification will need patience and a long-term outlook. Meanwhile, Canada will maintain its economic ties with the U.S., as trade wars create only losers.
