The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that Mexico's top diplomat says the government is not interested in a separate trade deal with Washington that would replace the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. The Globe's Steven Chase writes that next week, Mexico will hold the third round of formal negotiations with the U.S. on renewing the USMCA, while talks between Canada and the U.S. have not yet started. On Wednesday, Trade Representative Jamieson Greer noted that the U.S. has not started formal talks with Canada on the trade pact's future. Canadian and Mexican officials did not confirm if their acceptance of Chinese-made electric vehicles will affect the renewal of the USMCA. Mr. Greer has expressed concerns over Prime Minister Mark Carney's decision to lift the 100-per-cent tariffs on Chinese EVs that were previously co-ordinated with Washington in 2024. Mr. Carney is allowing in 49,000 Chinese EVs annually under a much reduced tariff rate -- a quota that will rise over the next five years. Canada is trying to attract Chinese EV manufacturers to build in Canada. Also Wednesday, Mr. Greer said he's glad Canada dropped its digital services tax and "rolled back" its Online Streaming Act.
