The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Prime Minister Mark Carney conceded that the Gordie Howe bridge might operate at a loss initially and defended a recent deal with President Donald Trump that allocates some toll revenue to support Michigan's economy. The Globe's Steven Chase writes that consequently, Canada may not receive significant toll proceeds to share with the U.S. at the start. Mr. Carney aimed to clarify questions regarding the July 10 agreement that addressed Mr. Trump's concerns about the toll revenue. The PM said net revenue from tolls, after expenses are stripped out, could be negative at first. The new bridge is set to open after months of uncertainty stemming from a threat by the President to block its debut. On Thursday, Mr. Carney played down the costs to Canada of pacifying Mr. Trump. Canada planned to recoup the money over decades by collecting tolls to cover both the advanced funds and the borrowed money for construction. Canada will share some toll proceeds with the U.S. for the next 15 years under a new agreement announced last week. Mr. Carney said it's wrong to characterize the Trump agreement as toll sharing because in fact it's only sharing net revenue after expenses.
