The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday edition that Canada will share net profits from the Gordie Howe International Bridge with the United States through a 15-year economic development fund, resolving a stalemate over the bridge's future that began when President Donald Trump threatened to block its opening. The Globe's Andrea Woo and Nicolas Van Praet write that Mr. Trump's threat followed Matthew Moroun, chairman of the Ambassador Bridge, donating $1-million (U.S.) to a pro-Trump campaign group and reportedly meeting with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Under the new agreement, the U.S. will receive 50 per cent of net profits from toll revenue and must agree to any toll hikes greater than 10 per cent. The deal also includes a provision requiring U.S. approval to lower tolls below a regional average. The bridge is jointly owned by the governments of Canada and Michigan. Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson called the new agreement a win for both countries and their shared economy. Details of the agreement matter little to the auto sector, which relies on two-way traffic between the countries. Franco Terrazzano at the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, called the agreement "deeply frustrating" for taxpayers.
