The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday edition that President Donald Trump has floated the idea of walking away from the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement twice in the past two weeks, leaving some Canadian businesses in a bind. Postmedia's Jonathan Juha writes that Prime Minister Mark Carney, however, is optimistic about progress in talks with U.S. representatives. Industry observers believe that Mr. Trump's comments may be posturing or a negotiating tactic, but the chances of renewing the trilateral trade agreement before the July 1 deadline are nearly non-existent. If that happens, CUSMA will undergo annual reviews for 10 years before expiring if not renewed, which analysts believe could harm the Canadian economy even more than the past year-and-a-half. Ivey Business School's Mahmood Nanji says the longer this deal takes, the more uncertainty it creates for the Canadian economy, which has already seen suppressed growth in the last two quarters. Honda Canada indefinitely suspended its planned $15-billion investment in an electric vehicle and battery manufacturing complex in Alliston, Ont., illustrating the impact of trade tensions on investment in Canada. Prolonged CUSMA negotiations would only exacerbate this issue.
