The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Ontario Premier Doug Ford said a majority government would provide certainty to U.S. trade talks and expressed optimism the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement will endure through the Trump era. The Globe's Laura Stone reports that Mr. Ford, after a three-day trip to Austin, Tex., to meet with business leaders and U.S. officials, said the economic partnership between Ontario and the U.S. remains strong despite the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. The Texas outreach is part of an effort to shore up support for his province's industries and advocate against tariffs, including to Republicans such as U.S. Congressman Roger Williams. Mr. Ford said he believes the USMCA, which is up for review on July 1, will stay in place "with a few tweaks," including on sectoral tariffs hitting steel and aluminum sectors. Mr. Ford said there are 175 companies that do business in both Ontario and Texas and it is important to speak with them directly. Austin Chamber of Commerce president Jeremy Martin said international trade continues to be a top priority for the state. He said Mr. Ford's trade mission is a "very positive" sign for the Canada-U.S. relationship.
