The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Feb. 13, edition that Stellantis will add a third shift at its Windsor, Ont., minivan and muscle-car plant, creating 1,700 jobs amid industry challenges. The Globe's Eric Atkins writes that the new shift starts Tuesday, bringing the work force to about 6,000. The Windsor plant makes Dodge Chargers, as well as minivans: the Chrysler Grand Caravan for the Canadian market and Chrysler Pacifica for the North American market. The jobs are a positive amid uncertainty and job losses in the Canadian auto sector due to U.S. tariffs and low demand for electric vehicles. Ottawa may take legal action against Stellantis for shifting some production to Illinois. The new shift, which was supposed to start last fall but was delayed because of new tariffs, is being added amid rising sales of minivans. Minivan sales rose by 40 per cent in Canada to 43,000 in 2025, says DesRosiers Automotive Consultants, and by 21 per cent in the United States. Overall sales in both countries rose by about 2 per cent. "Canadians are starting to look at minivans as a more practical solution for their families" as prices for large SUVs rise beyond many buyers' reach, said Stellantis Canada chief Trevor Longley.
