The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced plan to strengthen the automotive sector and lower greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting incentives for electric vehicle purchases and a proposal for credits to boost domestic manufacturing. The Globe's Eric Atkins writes that the changes, including the removal of EV sales mandates and new investments in charging infrastructure, are key to Ottawa's support for Canada's auto industry and electrification amid trade upheaval. The PM said the measures involve direct support and tax incentives for businesses to promote domestic manufacturing and encourage consumers to buy zero-emissions vehicles. The announcement comes 10 months after President Donald Trump applied 25-per-cent tariffs on the non-U.S. content of Canadian-made cars, declaring the U.S. does not need them. The PM said Canada is mulling imposing a system of tradeable credits on automakers to reward companies that manufacture in Canada and penalize those that do not. Carmakers that manufacture or invest in Canada would earn credits for doing so. Car companies must purchase credits to import cars to Canada tariff-free if they do not have a manufacturing plant here.
