The Financial Post reports in its Thursday edition that a dearth of information about Prime Minister Mark Carney's new strategic partnership with China has left Canada's auto sector scrambling to make sense of the deal and preparing for the worst. The Post's Gabriel Friedman writes that so far, the Prime Minister's Office has said it will allow China to send 49,000 electric vehicles into Canada at a 6.1-per-cent duty instead of the current 106.1 per cent. But the lack of industry consultation beforehand and details, including who decides what vehicle brands and models can enter Canada at the reduced rate, are fuelling suspicion among carmakers that the policy will create new uncertainty at a time when automakers are already reeling from the tariffs implemented by the United States. "The larger reality is we don't know anything about it," said David Adams at Global Automakers of Canada, a lobby group for Toyota, Honda and other foreign automakers. "This announcement just throws a wrench in the gears. Nobody knows anything. Nobody can tell you anything, not even the minister's office." The 49,000 number is less than 3 per cent of the 1.9 million new vehicles sold per year, but represents at least 25 per cent of total EV sales.
