The National Post reports in its Thursday, Jan. 15, edition that Canada is caught between a protectionist Trump administration and a Chinese regime often antagonistic to its interests. The Post's John Ivison writes that it is apparent Canada needs new markets. Expanding trade with Vietnam and Indonesia is beneficial, but Canada exports to Jakarta in a year what it sends to China monthly. To cover the U.S. shortfall, Canada needs to increase trade with Europe and/or China. Canada faces a challenge as trade for China serves to extend state power. Beijing provides significant support, like $230-billion (U.S.) in subsidies to its auto industry, giving its companies an advantage. Without a similar industrial policy, Canada risks being overwhelmed, as Chinese automakers now hold 20 per cent of car sales in Latin America and 75 per cent of the electric-vehicle market. It remains to be seen whether the Canadian action comes in the form of a suspension of the EV tariff, pending future study, or a percentage rollback. It would seem unlikely that Prime Minister Mark Carney will remove the EV tariff entirely: he is already being warned by Trump acolytes that the visit "won't end well" for him if he cozies up to Xi Jinping.
