The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Dec. 12, edition that on Thursday Prime Minister Mark Carney dismissed claims that President Donald Trump plans to withdraw from the USMCA. The Globe's Steven Chase writes that Jamieson Greer, the U.S. Trade Representative, earlier in the week, reiterated previous statements about uncertainty over maintaining the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement or negotiating separate deals with Mexico and Canada. When asked Thursday about a potential one-on-one trade deal with the U.S., Mr. Carney dismissed the notion that Mr. Trump is considering it. The PM said, "That's not what they're saying." As early as May, during Mr. Carney's first visit to the White House, Mr. Trump raised the possibility of exiting the USMCA. Mr. Greer returned to this theme on Wednesday. "Could it be exited? Yeah, it could be exited. Could it be revised? Yes. Could it be renegotiated? Yes," he said, adding, "All of those things are on the table." On Wednesday, he reiterated his September comments that renegotiations of The USMCA will mostly be conducted separately with each country, noting that the trilateral agreement does not address the different trade issues the U.S. faces with its neighbours.
