The Financial Post reports in its Thursday edition that the office of the U.S. Trade Representative has started a 45-day public consultation on the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Trade Agreement (CUSMA) ahead of a joint review set for July 1, 2026. The Post's Barbara Shecter writes that the consultation includes written submissions and a public hearing on Nov. 17, 2024. "This consultation process is required by U.S. law," the trade office said Tuesday. The public can comment on any aspect of CUSMA implementation, including compliance issues and recommendations for the upcoming joint review. Comments may address factors influencing the North American investment climate and CUSMA's effectiveness in enhancing U.S. competitiveness and productivity. Additionally, the trade office seeks opinions on strategies to strengthen North American economic security and competitiveness. Canadian Chamber of Commerce chief executive officer Candace Laing said a successful review of CUSMA is the only way to restore certainty and confidence after a months-long trade war kicked off by the United States. She said, "The launch of this U.S. consultation on the CUSMA by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative is an important milestone."
