The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, Oct. 1, edition that a Manitoba potash producer, Potash and Agri Development Corporation (PADCOM), has partnered with Arctic Gateway Group to assess exporting potash from the Port of Churchill, which could see a multibillion-dollar expansion. The Globe's Jeffrey Jones writes that the partnership aims to enhance potash markets, improve Northern infrastructure and supply chains, and promote local economic growth and employment. They will co-ordinate logistics, address environmental concerns and explore expansion opportunities for Manitoba's potash industry. PADCOM and Arctic Gateway announced an alliance as Ottawa reviews the potential expansion of the Port of Churchill and its railway. This proposal is part of an economic development strategy presented last week by Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew. Shipping seasons in Hudson Bay are extending due to climate change, leading to more ice-free days and increased tidewater traffic. Arctic Gateway has been sending shipments of zinc concentrate to Europe on behalf of Hudbay Minerals. The partners said they are planning to test transporting potash from PADCOM's mine in next year's shipping season, with more volume expected in 2027.
