The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, Sept. 6, edition that Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew is upbeat about the Port of Churchill becoming a major export hub for Western Canadian commodities. The Globe's Jeffrey Jones and Kate Helmore write that Prime Minister Mark Carney announced plans for investment in new infrastructure for ports, including Churchill, Man., Contrecoeur, Que. and on the East Coast, calling them nation-building projects. A draft list of 32 projects for fast-track approvals under the new Building Canada Act includes the underused port on Hudson Bay. It highlights the port's potential for export facilities for many commodities. The proposed expansion plans a multimodal rail and port corridor, potentially featuring transmission lines to Nunavut and funding for icebreakers. The port has a long history of shipping grain, though that business withered when subsidies ended a decade ago. But activities are under way to revive facility. Arctic Gateway Group (AGG), which runs the port and the railway that serves it, has been exporting test shipments of zinc concentrate from a mine run by Hudbay Minerals. AGG had been planning for expansion even before U.S. President Donald Trump launched his trade war.
