The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that suddenly, pipelines are all the rage. The Globe's Andrew Coyne writes that time was when you couldn't get a pipeline built in Canada. That was then (that is, about a week ago). Now we're wading around hip deep in all the oil that will notionally be delivered by notional pipelines, with governments' enthusiastic support. And by enthusiastic, Mr. Coyne means "taxpayer-funded." The pipeline to just south of Vancouver will an estimated $35.2-billion to $43.7-billion -- and by estimated, that means "probably four times that amount." Now we have the proposed Northern Shield Energy Corridor from Hardisty, Alta., to Sarnia, Ont., courtesy the taxpayers. Once potential private sponsors figured out that the B.C. pipeline must be built, they started visibly trying to game the two governments, claiming the terms of the agreement, namely the increased industrial carbon price and Pathways carbon-capture project, made it too costly for them. Possibly they hoped they would get the subsidy. Instead, the two governments elected to build it themselves, in the manner of the Trans Mountain bailout. No pipelines is bad; now we have any and all pipelines (no matter how uneconomic).
