The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, March 13, edition that the Calgary Chamber of Commerce surveyed its members about Alberta separation and found that the ongoing debate is significantly impacting business. The Globe's Gary Mason writes that a recent survey revealed that 28 per cent of respondents felt talks about Alberta separating from Canada were impacting their business, with 88 per cent reporting negative effects. As well, 51 per cent noted a negative impact on the provincial economy due to separation talk. A majority ranked separation talks as the top issue for the province's economy, ahead of U.S. tariffs and new pipeline construction. Former Alberta cabinet minister Thomas Lukaszuk says Premier Danielle Smith has done nothing but help the separatist cause. Alberta's top economic priority is securing a proponent to invest billions in a new pipeline to tidewater, but the current separatist uncertainty makes this unlikely. The sooner this question is resolved, the better -- not only for Alberta, but for the country. With polls showing a vast majority of Albertans opposed to separation, it is time Ms. Smith forcefully condemned those trying to destroy Canada with their naive and foolish campaign.
