The Financial Post reports in its Thursday edition that following a meeting with Alberta Indigenous Affairs Minister Rajan Sawhney, Gitga'at First Nation leaders reaffirmed their opposition to oil tankers off the B.C. north coast. A Postmedia dispatch says that Cameron Hill, Gitga'at First Nation's deputy chief said, "Our stance is very clear that the world does not know how to clean up an oil spill yet." Following the memorandum of understanding between Alberta and the federal government for a potential oil pipeline to the B.C. coast, Ms. Sawhney met with first nations to address their concerns, not to promote the project. "The whole idea was to be able to have a dialogue. I wasn't there to try to change anybody's minds or do some sort of a hard sell," said Ms. Sawhney, who met representatives of the Gitga'at First Nation and other coastal first nations last week. Ms. Sawhney clarified details of the MOU and listened to their perspectives. Despite her "wholehearted" belief in the value of the pipeline, Ms. Sawhney emphasized that now is "not the time" to negotiate with first nations about it, but instead to listen and learn, to enable stronger relationships. Despite political support, the pipeline has no proponent.
