The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Nov. 21, edition that British Columbia Premier David Eby criticized Alberta and Saskatchewan for allegedly conducting "secret" talks with Ottawa on oil pipelines, claiming it jeopardizes major economic development in his province.
The Globe's Justine Hunter and Emma Graney write that the pipeline dispute intensified after Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe announced his involvement in Alberta's talks with Ottawa regarding a potential oil pipeline across Northern B.C., which would permit oil tankers in currently banned waters off B.C.'s north coast.
Mr. Eby said he learned about them through media reports.
The B.C. Premier said Alberta and Saskatchewan are jeopardizing multibillion-dollar investments in liquefied natural gas that have been negotiated with broad support from first nations. The talks between Alberta and Ottawa indicate a shift in their relationship. Premier Danielle Smith has criticized the previous Liberal government's environmental policies for harming Alberta's oil and gas sector. Prime Minister Mark Carney has pledged to pursue Canada's environmental goals while boosting resource production and exports to reduce reliance on the U.S. economy.
