The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, Oct. 8, edition that the war of words between Danielle Smith and David Eby over a proposed oil pipeline to British Columbia's North Coast intensified Tuesday. The Globe's Bill Curry and Justine Hunter write that Mr. Eby labelled the Alberta proposal as "fictional" and "non-existent," suggesting B.C. has better projects to prioritize. In response, Ms. Smith addressed the media during a news conference in Ottawa, part of her trip aimed at promoting interprovincial trade. "Premier Eby's comments are un-Canadian and unconstitutional," she said, noting that the Supreme Court asserts interprovincial pipelines are federally regulated. "The courts have been clear, and I hope Prime Minister Mark Carney recognizes his obligation to ensure these projects get built." She said a new oil pipeline would generate $20-billion a year for the Canadian economy. Last month Mr. Carney said he was working with Alberta on a carbon-capture-and-storage project that could ultimately lead to a new oil pipeline. The pipeline project lacks a private-sector proponent. Alberta has enlisted Enbridge, South Bow and Trans Mountain for technical and regulatory expertise, but they are not financing the project.
