The Financial Post reports in its Friday edition that Alberta Premier Danielle Smith hopes the onus is now on the federal government to add another oil pipeline across British Columbia. The Post's Chris Varcoe says Ms. Smith also hopes her proposal will be added to Ottawa's inventory of nationally significant projects being expedited for approval. The provincial government will lead an advisory group of companies to conduct planning, front-end engineering and necessary design work on the proposed pipeline. The technical advisory group will get help from existing pipeline operators Enbridge, South Bow and Trans Mountain, but so far there is no commitment from them to participate in building the proposal, nor has there been any indication they are interested in leading such a project. The group's contract is to help determine issues such as the route, pipeline size, cost and it will start early engagement with indigenous communities. Alberta's aspirations to build a new pipeline have been fuelled by Ms. Smith's desire to double oil and gas production in the future. A new oil pipeline is already facing opposition from environmental groups, the B.C. government and some first nations, and will still need a private proponent.
