The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday, Sept. 30, edition that a recent ATB Capital Markets survey indicates that many in Canada's oil and gas sector doubt a major new pipeline will be prioritized by Ottawa. The Post's Meghan Potkins writes that only 52 per cent of energy insiders believe a new pipeline is "probable" or "highly probable" for regulatory review in the next year, while 20 per cent are uncertain and 29 per cent view it as "improbable" or "highly improbable." The report reflects responses from executives at 91 energy-related firms and offers insight into industry sentiment. The survey conducted from Aug. 28 to Sept. 11 may have influenced executives' skepticism, according to ATB, as the Carney government announced its first five "projects of national interest" on Sept. 11, which did not include a new pipeline. The initial list from Ottawa did include LNG Canada's second phase and recognized the need for further work on a "Pathways Plus" project, combining carbon capture in Alberta's oil sands with additional energy infrastructure for oil export. The survey found growing pessimism that previously cancelled oil pipeline projects -- Northern Gateway, Keystone XL or Energy East -- could be revived.
