The Financial Post reports in its Saturday, Sept. 27, edition that rising output from the expanded Trans Mountain pipeline contributed to record cargo shipments at the Port of Vancouver in the first half of 2025. Postmedia's Derrik Penner writes in the Post that crude oil, primarily diluted bitumen from Alberta's oil sands, became the second-largest export commodity, with shipments reaching 11.6 million tonnes -- up 365 per cent from the same period in 2024. The port saw a 13-per-cent increase in cargo, totalling 85 million tonnes from January to June, with container shipments remaining stable. Coal exports declined by 2 per cent, while the Westshore and Neptune bulk terminals handled 20.7 million tonnes, mainly metallurgical coal. The expanded Trans Mountain pipeline, which started operations in May, 2024, has increased overall Western Canadian oil export capacity by 13 per cent and its capacity to ship oil by tanker by 700 per cent, according to the Canadian Energy Regulator's latest facility snapshot.
