The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson says Ottawa aims to establish a carbon-capture project in Alberta's oil sands to reduce emissions and eventually support a new oil pipeline. The Globe's Emma Graney writes that Mr. Hodgson says construction on the carbon-capture project proposed by the Pathways Alliance could begin soon after final details with the Alberta government are resolved. The Pathways initiative is a 400-kilometre pipeline designed to transport carbon from oil sands facilities to an underground hub near Cold Lake, Alta., aiming to reduce emissions by 22 megatonnes annually. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Thursday that the plan will be referred to the federal Major Projects Office. Mr. Hodgson said that if Pathways is built and receives support from relevant jurisdictions and first nations, there is potential for a new oil pipeline to the coast. "That's what we're working toward," he said. Pairing progress on Pathways with a new pipeline aligns with Premier Danielle Smith's "grand bargain" with the federal government. Mr. Hodgson said Ottawa and Alberta agree that Pathways would be a nation-building project.
