The Financial Post reports in its Friday, Aug. 29, edition that Trans Mountain chief executive officer Mark Maki suggests Ottawa wait three to five years to sell the pipeline system. The Post's Barbara Shecter writes that Mr. Maki, who became CEO last September, stated that Trans Mountain is generating significant cash for Canadians and expects its valuation to increase as it reaches full operating capacity. Mr. Maki said: "In my heart of hearts, (the time to sell is) a few years out. I would say three to five." Trans Mountain's adjusted earnings reached $558-million in the second quarter, almost double the $283-million from the same period last year. Year-to-date pipeline throughput increased to 730,000 barrels per day from 402,000 barrels, with a usage rate of 82 per cent for 2025. Mr. Maki said: "We're on track to exceed $1.25-billion by year end. These are tangible returns to Canadians." The federal government will continue receiving dividends and interest payments until the pipeline is sold. Mr. Maki suggested that a large pension fund, likely from Canada, would be a suitable owner of the pipeline system transporting oil from Alberta to British Columbia and into Washington State.
