The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, July 28, edition that a recent Environics Research poll, conducted June 11 to 23, with 2,072 adult Canadian, shows that 73 per cent of Canadians support building new oil pipelines to the East or West Coast, supporting Prime Minister Mark Carney's vision of making Canada an energy superpower through major infrastructure projects. The Globe's Emma Graney writes that even in Quebec, traditionally opposed to such developments, 59 per cent back a West Coast pipeline and 55 per cent favour one to the East Coast. This support comes amid U.S. President Donald Trump's trade war, where he may impose a 35-per-cent tariff on some Canadian goods. Mr. Carney and several premiers stress the importance of securing a favourable deal in ongoing trade talks with the U.S., even if it means missing the Aug. 1 deadline. When asked which energy projects to prioritize, one in six chose conventional energy, one in four selected clean energy, while half supported both. Even in oil-rich Alberta, 55 per cent agreed on prioritizing both conventional and clean energy development.
The only place that does not hold is in Quebec, where more people favour clean energy development alone.
