The National Post reports in its Thursday edition that Bloc Quebecois leader Yves-Francois Blanchet will fight any pipeline expansion. The Post's Jason Magder writes that one of the pipelines that could be revived is Energy East, which was designed to transport oil from Alberta's oil sands through Ontario to refineries in Quebec and New Brunswick. The project was put on hold indefinitely in 2017 due to a lack of social acceptance. However, it could be reconsidered if the United States follows through on threats to impose tariffs on Canadian oil.
Mr. Blanchet says, "There are no significant economic benefits for Quebec in this project, but there is a quantifiable and measurable ecological impact." Asked what the Bloc would do if there was a groundswell of support for the pipeline, Mr. Blanchet says his answer is no. He says pipelines are the past, and the Quebec economy and its energy development are based on renewable energy solutions, like hydro electricity. He says, "There is no payoff for us to put billions of dollars into the oil of the west that harms the environment, instead of keeping our money and investing it in an economic model that is compatible with the interests of Quebec and the interests of the planet."
