The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, March 21, edition that Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to introduce a new approach for energy infrastructure development at his inaugural meeting with provincial and territorial leaders on Friday. The Globe's Stephanie Levitz writes that this meeting will conclude Mr. Carney's first week as PM as he prepares to call an election.
He aims to establish a faster process for delivering projects such as pipelines and energy corridors, a goal that Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has advocated for years. Mr. Carney emphasized that Canada must adapt to the current circumstances by taking actions that were previously unimagined, and at a pace we have not experienced before. Mr. Carney stated that a commitment to co-operation already exists. However, he added that "additional levers" are needed, which he will outline on Friday in discussions with the premiers. Ahead of the housing announcement, Mr. Carney met with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, who had previously expressed skepticism about his approach to resource development. After the meeting, Ms. Smith stated that Alberta does not want to be pushed around, as it felt during the Liberal government's tenure.
