The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, March 5, edition that Canada should declare pipeline projects in the national interest to increase energy market access amid U.S. tariffs, says Enbridge chief executive officer Greg Ebel. The Globe's Emma Graney writes that Mr. Ebel says the current regulatory environment makes it impossible to build pipelines like the Northern Gateway, which was abandoned nearly a decade ago after the permits were revoked. He says, "The ability to actually get anything done would take significant legislative changes." The only way that might happen, he says, would be for the government to deem the projects in the national interest or to declare an energy emergency. "If this is the significant crisis that I know many Canadians feel that it is, then you would think you'd want your lawmakers actually making laws to address that." In February, President Trump threatened 10-per-cent tariffs on oil and gas imports, reviving talks about the need for pipelines like the Northern Gateway or Energy East to reach overseas markets. Canadian Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson suggested a national discussion on the need for a new east-west oil pipeline in light of U.S. protectionist threats.
