The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, April 29, edition that Trans Mountain is days away from official operations, and already there is demand for the oil it will transport. The Globe's Kelly Cryderman writes that a bit of celebration is in order, because Canada just got a big, complicated project done. There are still significant concerns from many people living along the pipeline route about oil spills. Moreover, Canada's oil sands producers have not yet proven their ability to reduce their substantial emissions. However, it is important to remember that crude oil and crude bitumen accounted for 16.2 per cent of Canada's total exports in 2023, making it the largest export in value terms by far, according to Statistics Canada. Therefore, if a country has a significant oil industry, it must have adequate pipeline capacity to transport the product to markets. The project nearly triples the flow of crude from Alberta to the coast, to a needle-moving 890,000 barrels a day. The expansion provides one big oil pipeline connected to one of Canada's oceans. This means the country is not totally beholden to shipping to the United States, and has a chance to export to more lucrative Asia.
