The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that a new company vying to export liquefied natural gas suggests that rail would be the best way to transport the fuel from B.C.'s Interior to the West Coast before shipping it in tankers to Asia. The Globe's Brent Jang writes that Summit Lake PG LNG proposes to move natural gas in liquid form via specialized shipping containers instead of building a new pipeline to the West Coast. The LNG will be supercooled near Prince George and then transported by rail to the Port of Prince Rupert. This alternative transportation method bypasses the need for a lengthy pipeline. Last week, the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office and the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada opened a comment period that runs until May 2 for public feedback on Summit Lake. JX LNG Canada, the subsidiary of Changchun Jixing New Energy of China, is the proponent of Summit Lake. The proposed location of the new facility is on the Hart North industrial site, about 30 kilometres north of Prince George. Canadian National Railway's network includes tracks that run from the B.C. Interior to the Fairview container terminal in Prince Rupert. JX said it has held talks with Enbridge to obtain natural gas.
