The Vancouver Sun reports in its Thursday edition the oil industry's main lobby group says new pipelines to the West Coast are needed more than ever. The Sun's Derrick Penner, writes in a renewed sales pitch to British Columbians, the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers promises it will talk less and listen more. To that end, CAPP will open an office in Vancouver, said the organization's chief, Tim McMillan. British Columbia, however, might prove to be more challenging ground just as other jurisdictions, such as the European Union, are making bigger commitments to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. Mr. McMillan argues the oil industry has a a culture of "continuous improvement" that has seen producers reduce by 30 per cent, compared with the 1990s, the emissions generated to produce a barrel of oil sands oil, and recycle 95 per cent of the water they use. University of B.C. resource-policy expert George Hoberg is doubtful that reducing emissions per barrel of oil wins the industry much support. Prof. Hoberg said CAPP would do better to talk more about developing a clear plan for moving Canada on a path toward playing a "more meaning full role in global efforts to reduce carbon emissions."
