The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday, May 12, edition that Newmarket Gold and Crocodile Gold announced a friendly $190-million merger on Monday that will give Newmarket control over most of the combined board and management. The Post's Peter Koven writes that Crocodile is an established gold producer in Australia, while Newmarket is little more than a shell company. However, Newmarket boasts some very big names on its board, including Lukas Lundin, Randall Oliphant (of New Gold) and Raymond Threlkeld (of Rainy River Resources). Newmarket's plan is to use the Crocodile mines as a platform to buy more gold assets under the "Newmarket" name. Newmarket chief executive officer Doug Forster says: "There is lots of competition for assets, but that's why we put this team together. ... Assets are not going to walk through our door. They will be found with our deep relationships in the capital markets and in the mining sector." Mr. Forster, 57, is not as famous in mining circles as Mr. Lundin or Mr. Oliphant, but he has a solid record in the industry. He worked for several large mining companies in the 1970s and 1980s, and then joined up with financiers Bob Hunter and Bob Dickinson.
