Globe says Capital Power aims for data-centre growth

2026-08-17 08:16 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, Aug. 15, edition that along Alberta's Highway 770, about 70 kilometres southwest of Edmonton, lies Capital Power's Genesee Generating Station, one of the largest electricity plants in the province. The Globe's Emma Graney writes that this facility powers about 10 per cent of Alberta's grid and, according to chief executive officer Avik Dey, aims to become a hub for North America's artificial intelligence data-centre growth. He calls Genesee Capital Power's "crown jewel." Mr. Dey's firm belief that Genesee "is one of the most attractive sites for AI compute anywhere in North America" is partly a function of the site's unique set-up. Directly across from the power station is a decommissioned coal mine that supplied Genesee from 1989 to 2023. In 2024, the units were converted to natural gas at a cost of $1.6-billion, five years ahead of a provincial coal phase-out mandate. Capital Power owns about 20,000 acres between the plant, the mine and nearby land, which could be used to expand generation capacity or host data centres, according to Mr. Dey. He believes Alberta as a whole is an attractive market. He says the province is "open for business."
